Beneath our feet, the ground vibrates with a story that hops right out of the Isle of Man’s recent history. This is the Community Wallaby. It is a legacy of “Wallabies Gone Wild”. This art event captivated the island in 2019.

Imagine a landscape dotted with beautifully designed wallaby sculptures. Local and national artists painted them. Even school children joined in creating smaller “wallababy” sculptures. For 14 weeks, the island was alive with art.

The Wallabies Gone Wild initiative was hosted by Hospice Isle of Man. It proved very popular. The project raised over £250,000 for the Hospice. This happened at an auction at the Villa Marina in Douglas.

Our Community Wallaby stands here as a symbol of that success. Eve Adams designed it. She also designed Myn’changeroo Ferrishyn. That’s the Fairy Wallaby from the 2019 trail.

Myn’changeroo Ferrishyn captured the hearts of Castletown residents. Tom Rowe, from The Secret Pizza Company, even started a GoFundMe page. The community wanted to win the sculpture at auction.

Locals and businesses raised around £3,000. Sadly, it wasn’t enough. They were outbid. Hospice recognized the community’s passion. They offered Eve a blank wallaby sculpture. It was a thank you to Castletown.

Eve poured her heart into the design. Now, the Community Wallaby has found its forever-home here. It is a testament to community spirit.

The Isle of Man is now home to over 1,000 wallabies. They are descendants of escapees from the Wildlife Park in the 60s. These wallabies roam freely. They are in Sulby Glen, Ramsey Forest, and Ballaugh Glen. Drones track their heat signatures.

But the Community Wallaby is more than just a reminder of the wild wallabies. It embodies the spirit of the island. It showcases creativity and community collaboration. It is a tribute to the success of Wallabies Gone Wild. It reminds us of the art. It reminds us of the generosity of the people of Castletown.

Take a closer look at the Community Wallaby. Appreciate the artistry. Remember the story. Consider it a symbol of what a community can achieve together. It’s a vibrant and lasting legacy.
