Sweeping across the Plaza of Nations stands the Wall of Nations. It’s an unforgettable sight. This colossal steel sculpture, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is more than just a static piece of art. The Wall of Nations is a dynamic, moving spectacle. Imagine a 250-meter-long, 20-meter-high steel wall suspended 5 meters above the ground. It sways and ripples like fabric caught in a gentle breeze. This wave-like motion is created by 480 motors driving 960 vertical steel elements. The Wall of Nations isn’t just visually stunning. It also serves a practical purpose. It acts as a screen, a backdrop for projections during events in the Plaza. It cleverly masks a large hall located to the south, seamlessly integrating it into the Olympic Sports Complex. Calatrava designed the Wall of Nations as part of his ambitious plan for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He envisioned a revitalized 100-hectare area, including a new roof for the Olympic Stadium, a refurbished Velodrome, and the Agora complex. The Wall of Nations, with its flowing movement and imposing presence, became a centerpiece of this revitalization. It stands as a testament to Calatrava’s vision and a striking symbol of modern Athens.
