Founded in 1989, this little hamlet has blossomed into a sought-after residential idyll. Picture this: It’s January 2009, and Waldsiedlung Junkerfeld is blanketed in a thick layer of snow, the likes of which haven’t been seen in years. Eighteen days of pristine white, transforming the hamlet into a winter wonderland. Children excitedly visit their grandparents, eager to sled down the snowy slopes, much to the chagrin of the local butcher. He braves the icy roads every Wednesday to deliver his wares and share a bit of cheer. This time, however, the uphill climb to his customers proves treacherous. His van slips and slides, only regaining its grip on the icy road with the help of some kind-hearted residents. Imagine the scene: the biting cold doesn’t deter the residents from celebrating a double birthday outdoors. Around a crackling bonfire, they gather, their breath misting in the -20 degree air. The mulled wine freezes in its carton, the sausages refuse to brown on the grill, but the warmth of community spirit keeps them going.
