Had Martin Waldseemüller known his legacy, he might have double-checked his friend’s work. Here at the Waldseemüllerdenkmal, we celebrate a man whose map, the 1507 “Universalis Cosmographia”, christened a continent. Waldseemüller, a student at the University of Freiburg, crafted this groundbreaking map. It featured a new continent, named “America” after Amerigo Vespucci. The Waldseemüllerdenkmal stands as a testament to this cartographic achievement born from Freiburg. The problem? Vespucci wasn’t the discoverer. Matthias Ringmann, Waldseemüller’s fellow student, mistakenly credited Vespucci in the accompanying text, and Waldseemüller, perhaps trusting his friend a bit too much, immortalized the error on his map. The Waldseemüllerdenkmal, therefore, marks a pivotal moment in history, a geographical christening based on a friendly blunder. While Waldseemüller’s map solidified the name “America,” he also created other significant works. His depiction of Lorraine, for example, demonstrates his detailed approach to cartography. Ironically, despite naming America, Waldseemüller himself may have never journeyed across the Atlantic.
