Waldkirch’s story began with the founding of Saint Margaret convent. This event in 918 laid the foundation for the town’s growth. The Schwarzenbergs a powerful family took over later. Waldkirch became an official city of Further Austria until 1805. It then transitioned to the Grand Duchy of Baden and remained in the district of Baden until 1936. World War II left Waldkirch largely unscathed. The town joined the newly formed federal state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. A significant municipal reform in 1975 shaped the city we know today. Waldkirch Buchholz and Kollnau merged becoming one entity. Initially named Waldkirch-Kollnau the name was later simplified.
