Alfred von Waldersee. A name that echoes through the annals of German history. Here, at the Waldersee-Denkmal, his legacy takes on a tangible form. This colossal statue, crafted by Bernhard Hoetger between 1914 and 1915, stands as a striking conclusion to Kleine Pfahlstraße. The Waldersee-Denkmal isn’t just a statue. It’s a window into a complex era.

City Director Heinrich Tramm proposed this monument in 1910. Waldersee’s ties to Hanover were multifaceted. He served as a young officer in 1866. He later commanded a Uhlan regiment and led the General Staff of the 10th Army Corps. Eventually, he became the General Inspector of the 3rd Army Inspection. He died in Hanover in 1904 and was buried here. The monument stands opposite the Villa Waldersee, his home from 1898 until his death. Tramm’s confidence stemmed from Waldersee’s role in suppressing the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, an event that resonated with Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The Waldersee-Denkmal, completed in 1915, showcases Waldersee in a uniform coat, a field marshal’s baton held over a helmet in his right hand. His left hand grips a downward-pointing shield inscribed with “Mit Gott für Kaiser und Reich” (“With God for Emperor and Reich”). A draped eagle creates the impression of a niche. The statue stands upon a dragon, adding a layer of symbolism. The pedestal bears inscriptions. One side proclaims, “General Fieldmarschall Graf von Waldsee” (“General Field Marshal Count von Waldsee”). The other dedicates the monument to Waldersee, an honorary citizen of Hanover.

Hoetger’s design incorporates runic-style lettering, Gothic-inspired wall figures, and the Roland statue motif, prevalent in medieval Germany. The Roland figure traditionally carries a sword, a symbol of justice. The Waldersee-Denkmal, however, replaces the sword with a pointed shield. This artistic choice connects the monument to broader cultural trends. Theorist Bruno Taut considered the Roland of Brandenburg an expressionist artwork. The Waldersee-Denkmal reflects similar influences, as does the Bismarck monument in Hamburg. It became a subject of controversy shortly after its unveiling, criticized as a “mummery” and “inartistic horror.” Its symbolism and Hoetger’s artistic choices continue to generate debate even today.
