Perched atop the Kii Peninsula sits Wakayama. Have you ever imagined a place where spirituality and natural beauty intertwine? Wakayama, a city and capital of Wakayama Prefecture, is located in west-central Honshu. It lies at the mouth of the Kino River. Wakayama sits along the Kii Strait. This strait leads from the Pacific Ocean into the Inland Sea.

Wakayama’s story began in 1585. Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the construction of a castle. This marked the start of the settlement’s growth. Later, Wakayama became the headquarters for the Kii branch of the ruling Tokugawa family. From 1716 to 1867, the last seven shoguns of Japan came from this branch.

Centuries ago, the area now known as Wakayama Prefecture drew pilgrims. Mount Kōya became a key Buddhist center. Kūkai, an early advocate for Buddhism, founded the Shingon sect here in the ninth century. Many temples still offer lodging to visitors. Kumano, to the southeast, boasts three major Shintō shrines. Walking trails connect these sacred sites.

Wakayama’s warm climate makes it a major fruit producer. It leads Japan in growing mandarins, ume apricots, and persimmons. The prefecture is also number one for hassaku citrus fruits and sanshō or Japanese pepper. Arida, a small city here, invented the mosquito coil. It remains a leading manufacturer today.

Wakayama has deep ties to Kyoto. For over 1,000 years, Kyoto served as Japan’s capital. During this time, the Imperial Court governed from the Kansai area. Arts, literature, religion, and spirituality flourished. Pilgrimages became an important part of life for royals and commoners. The imperial family often visited Wakayama Prefecture seeking enlightenment. This cemented Wakayama as a spiritually significant region.

After Toji Temple was built to guard Kyoto in the late 8th century, Emperor Saga appointed Kobo Daishi as head priest. Kobo Daishi studied Buddhism in China. He then established the Shingon Buddhist training center on Wakayama’s Koyasan. This forged a strong link between Kyoto and Wakayama. Toji Temple headquartered Shingon Buddhism. Koyasan served as the training center for monks and spiritual practice.

Today, Wakayama is still an area of spiritual awakening and natural wonder. Travelers often seek an escape from city life here. Many shrines, temples, and pilgrimage routes from over 1,000 years ago remain. Emperors, shoguns, and samurai once walked these paths.

One can experience a thrilling journey from Kyoto to Wakayama. Like ancient pilgrims, explore Koyasan and the Kumano Kodo. Wakayama invites you to discover its spiritual heart. It is a place where history and nature create a unique experience.
