“Largest of Chiba City’s six wards,” someone remarks as we arrive in Wakaba Ward. Let’s dive into the story of this unique place. Wakaba Ward is one of the six administrative divisions within Chiba City. It is located inland southeast of the city center.

Following the Meiji Restoration, this area was once divided into several villages. These included Tsuga, Miyako, Chishiro, Shirai, and Sarashina. These villages existed within Chiba District. Over time, these villages were annexed into the city of Chiba. This process started with Tsuga and Miyako in 1935. Chishiro followed in 1944. In 1955, Shirai and Sarashina merged to become Izumi. Izumi was then annexed by Chiba in 1963.

Wakaba Ward came into existence on April 1, 1992. This happened when Chiba was designated a city with greater autonomy.

Wakaba Ward is a regional commercial hub. It also serves as a bedroom community for those working in central Chiba and Tokyo. Many residents commute to these areas for work.

Traveling through Wakaba Ward is convenient. JR East Sōbu Line runs through here. Additionally, the Chiba Urban Monorail Line 2 provides local transport. You can hop on or off at Dōbutsukōen, Mitsuwadai, or Tsuga. Other stations include Sakuragi, Oguradai, Chishirodai-Kita, and Chishirodai.

Several highways also pass through Wakaba Ward. These include the Chiba-Tōgane Road and the Keiyō Road. Japan National Routes 16, 126, and 51 are also accessible.

As of April 2012, Wakaba Ward had an estimated population of 151,593. The population density was about 1,800 people per square kilometer. Its total area spans 84.21 square kilometers. This makes it the largest ward in Chiba City. However, in 2020, the population was 146,940.

Wakaba Ward provides municipal education. The Chiba City Board of Education oversees elementary and junior high schools. There are also several municipal elementary schools such as Chishiro, Kita Kaizuka, and Sakuragi.

Several notable people hail from Wakaba Ward. Kazuhisa Ishii is a professional baseball player. Shugo Oshinari is an actor. Tatsuya Morita and Naoto Kamifukumoto are both professional soccer players.

Wakaba Ward embodies a blend of history and modern life. It links local charm with urban convenience.
