It forces us to contemplate the very act of waiting. The Waiting Sculpture, created by Brooklyn-based artist KAWS, officially debuted in 2019 at The Greenpoint development on the India Street waterfront. These aren’t just static bronze figures. They’re over 20-feet tall “Companion figures,” and they gaze out at the East River, a silent vigil in front of luxury condos. KAWS, also known as Brian Donnelly, chose this spot deliberately. He actually lived just blocks away. He envisioned the sculpture as a reflection of the daily ritual of waiting. He imagined waiting for his wife to arrive by ferry. He saw the diverse crowds embarking and disembarking, each with their own stories and destinations. The Waiting Sculpture thus becomes a poignant symbol of anticipation.
