Did you ever hear of a house with only two of its kind left in all of Germany? Here at the Wächterhaus in Freiberg, you’re standing before one such rarity. The Wächterhaus, nestled within the “Gartentraum Bergmannsgruss” allotment garden, whispers tales of a bygone era. Built in 1909, the Wächterhaus served as both home and headquarters for the garden’s watchman. He lived upstairs, enjoying reduced rent, while the ground floor housed tools, toilets, and other necessities. Imagine him, the watchman, as a vital link between landlord and gardeners. He managed the equipment, ensured order and security, and collected the rent. Living on-site allowed him to efficiently handle these diverse responsibilities. This Wächterhaus stands as a cultural monument in Freiberg-Ost, a testament to its unique role in the early development of allotment gardens. There’s another Wächterhaus in Freiberg-Süd, within the “6. Maβschacht” allotment garden. Both are recognized as cultural monuments, reminders of a time when such structures were more common. Time has taken its toll on this particular Wächterhaus. But there are plans to restore it, preserving its historical fabric while respecting its original function. The roof has already been renovated by master roofer Schramm, a promising first step in bringing this piece of history back to life. It’s remarkable to think that out of all the Wächterhäuser built, only two remain in Germany, and you’re standing before one of them. The Wächterhaus embodies the spirit of community and resourcefulness that characterized these gardens.
