“A shimmering glass facade, wouldn’t you say?” I ask, gesturing towards the W35 Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center. It’s a modern marvel at MIT, completed in the fall of 2002. The W35 Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center isn’t just a gym. It’s a testament to MIT’s commitment to a vibrant student life. The center’s design also plays a crucial role in fulfilling Eero Saarinen’s master plan for the campus. It seamlessly links the Johnson Athletic Center and the Stratton Student Center, completing the north wall of a planned quadrangle. The W35 Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center is more than just a building. It’s a hub of activity, glowing with life from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., inviting everyone in. Inside, you’ll find an Olympic-sized pool in a triple-height natatorium, alongside a six-lane, 25-yard instructional pool. Amphitheater seating provides space for 450 spectators. Imagine cheering on the MIT swim, dive, and water polo teams. The center also boasts six international squash courts, each equipped with digital scoreboards, overlooking the vibrant pool area. Up on the third floor, the Muckley MAC Court, a multi-activity space, offers a stunning view of the Boston skyline. Here, you can play anything from indoor soccer to basketball, surrounded by hockey dasher boards and protective netting. The W35 Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center isn’t just for students. Faculty, staff, and alumni can also enjoy the state-of-the-art fitness facilities. It’s a place where the MIT community comes together, a vibrant hub of activity and connection. The building even received national recognition. It was honored as one of 10 National Facility of Merit Winners at the 22nd Annual Athletic Business Conference in 2003. This award recognizes facilities that set the standard for design and function in athletic, recreation, and fitness projects. The W35 Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center truly stands as a beacon of health and community spirit on the MIT campus.
