A behemoth of steel and concrete. That’s the VW Tower in Hanover. It stands tall a silent sentinel against the Hannover skyline.

For decades the VW Tower was more than just a structure. It was a vital communication hub. It transmitted television and radio signals across the city. Built between 1958 and 1959 it was a marvel of engineering. It was one of the first steel-concrete television towers in Germany. Designed by the renowned engineer Fritz Leonhardt. The same architect who designed the Stuttgart Television Tower. The VW Tower’s unique design made it a technical wonder.

Initially the tower was meant to be built near the main post office. That building was torn down in 2003 to make way for the Ernst-August-Galerie. But city planners decided the Raschplatz was a better location. The VW Tower became more than just a communication tool. It became a symbol of the city. A nickname arose. People called it “Telemoritz”. A playful reference to the Wilhelm Busch characters Max and Moritz. It helped distinguish it from the newer Telemax tower in Groß-Buchholz.

Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge acquired the tower around 2000 for a symbolic one Deutsche Mark. They added a rotating illuminated advertisement. Three Volkswagen logos shone brightly beneath the tower’s peak. Unfortunately the motor malfunctioned. The lights remained static. In 2019 the logo was updated to reflect Volkswagen’s new branding. The energy crisis in 2022 led to the lights being switched off entirely.

In 2020 a large chunk of concrete broke off the tower. It narrowly missed two pedestrians. This incident highlighted the tower’s aging structure. The increasing maintenance costs prompted Volkswagen to put it up for sale in 2023. When no buyer was found they filed for demolition in 2024.

But the city of Hanover had other plans. They considered the VW Tower a significant part of their cityscape. Local politicians protested its potential demolition. The tower was deemed architecturally significant. It also served as a landmark. It represented the city’s postwar technological advancement.

In 2024 the city declared the VW Tower a protected monument. The decision came after years of debate. The arguments were made on the basis of the uniqueness of the building’s design and its historical significance. This stopped the demolition.

A Hannover entrepreneur bought the VW Tower for a symbolic one Euro. Plans emerged to transform it into a residential building. The plan is to surround the original tower structure. It will have 160 small apartments. Each is about 25 square meters. This will stabilize the tower. It will also provide protection from the elements. The renovation is projected to cost between 20 and 30 million Euros. This repurposing will preserve the VW Tower’s legacy while giving it a new life. The VW Tower. A symbol of Hanover’s past present and future.
