“Vowlan. Hangman’s Hill. Dane’s Fort.” The names themselves hint at a past steeped in mystery. Vowlan stands as a promontory fort. It is a silent witness to centuries gone by.

Vowlan’s story is one of ancient assemblies and strategic strongholds. It overlooks the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is a small island in the Irish Sea. It sits midway between Ireland and the North of England.

The Isle of Man’s history is fascinating. It falls into three periods. First, early Celtic dwellers inhabited the island. Then, Viking invasions marked a period of Scandinavian rule. Finally, the English took dominion.

Around 500 AD, Irish missionaries visited the Isle of Man. Saint Patrick was said to be among them. They gradually converted the Celtic population to Christianity.

From 800 to 850 AD, Norse Vikings raided the island. They gradually settled. The Isle of Man became a Viking base. Control shifted between Scandinavian rulers.

In 1079, Godfred Crovan conquered the Isle of Man. He ruled from 1079 to 1095. Manx legend remembers him as King Gorry or Orry.

Tynwald Hill served as a national meeting place. The name ‘Tynwald’ comes from the Norse word ‘thingvollr’. It means assembly field. Vowlan might have echoed with similar gatherings.

All areas conquered by Vikings were nominally ruled by the Kings of Norway. Viking leaders fought for control.

The Isle of Man came under English influence in the 1330s. King Edward III of England gave the Isle of Man to William de Montacute.

Today, the Isle of Man has self-government as a Crown dependency. The British Crown ensures good government. The island’s government controls its internal affairs. It does not form part of the European Union.

Vowlan stands as more than just an archaeological site. It is a reminder of the Isle of Man’s captivating past. The echoes of Vikings and ancient assemblies linger. They invite us to imagine life as it once was.
