Why was a perfectly good roundabout demolished here? This is Vòng xoay An Hợi. You might know it better by its former name, the Willow Roundabout. It once stood as a beloved landmark in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. This spot, where Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street met Le Loi Street, was more than just a traffic circle. It was a place where memories were made. The Willow Roundabout was a witness to the city’s evolution, from its days as Saigon to its modern-day hustle and bustle. The roundabout was built in the early 20th century. It started as a simple octagonal space. French brass bands played here on weekends, filling the air with music. In 1942, a circular fountain replaced the bandstand, and in the 1970s, graceful willow trees were planted around it, giving the roundabout its iconic name. Sadly, in 2014, the Willow Roundabout was demolished to make way for a metro station. But the city hasn’t forgotten its charm. Plans are underway to restore this iconic landmark bringing a touch of old Saigon back to the heart of the city.
