Picture this a sprawling park a green haven in the heart of Hanover. This is the Von-Alten-Garten its history woven into the very soil beneath your feet.

The Von-Alten-Garten didn’t spring up overnight. Its story begins in the 13th century with the von Alten family. Their estate encompassed a vast 56 hectares. It included hunting rights judicial power and various tithes. Economic pressures forced the family to lease the estate in 1688. Franz-Ernst von Platen a powerful man at the court of Duke Ernst August became the new leaseholder. He needed a knight’s estate for a seat in the Landtag. He signed a limited-term contract. His ambition soared. In 1689 he secured the title of Imperial Count and Prime Minister. He expanded the estate significantly. New Linden a settlement developed with its own meierei brickworks and oil mill.

Von Platen built a baroque pleasure palace in 1692. He also created a magnificent French baroque garden. It rivaled the Herrenhausen Gardens. Water basins with fountains fruit orchards hedged bosquets kitchen gardens fishponds with swans an orangery and a menagerie filled the grounds. After von Platen’s death in 1709 neglect set in. His son Ernst August surrounded the sprawling garden with a four-meter high wall in 1718. A legal battle ensued. The von Alten family reclaimed the estate in 1728. The elaborate garden design was abandoned. By 1800 it transformed into an English landscape garden a style it largely retains today.

The 19th century brought industrial expansion. The garden shrank. In 1927 it gained protected status preventing its sale for development. The city of Hanover acquired a significant part in 1961. It opened it as a public park. The construction of the Westschnellweg sadly cut through the garden. A section of the 1718 wall with a gate remains a tangible link to the past. More land was acquired in 1997 adding a tranquil area opened for EXPO 2000.

The baroque palace didn’t survive. A World War II air raid destroyed it. Only the stone foundation remains. The Von-Alten-Garten however perseveres. It is a testament to history resilience and the enduring beauty of nature. A green sanctuary in a bustling city. Take a stroll through the Von-Alten-Garten. Let its history unfold before you. Notice the Ernst Brunnen a fountain with stylized steel trees symbolizing strength perseverance nature and patience. See the alleged Bruningstein a stone commemorating a legendary medieval duel. Explore the remnants of the old prison. And stand before the remnants of the imposing walls. Feel the history within these grounds. The Von-Alten-Garten more than a park it’s a living history lesson.
