“A stadium steeped in history.” This is Volksstadion in Greifswald. This stadium isn’t just a place for sports. It’s a living, breathing piece of Greifswald’s past. Opened on May 29, 1927, Volksstadion has witnessed countless moments of triumph and defeat. It has echoed with the cheers of fans and the roar of the crowd.

Volksstadion has a capacity of 8,000 spectators. It’s more than just a football stadium though. It’s a multi-sport complex complete with a track and field facility. Imagine athletes pushing their limits, striving for victory on the very ground where we stand. You can almost hear the starting pistol and feel the energy of the runners.

The main grandstand offers both covered and uncovered seating. The remaining stands offer standing room, except for the area opposite the main grandstand. This spot is typically reserved for visiting fans. The whole area is surrounded by a lush forest. It creates a unique atmosphere for every event. Two exceptions to the wooded backdrop are the areas behind the goals. One side houses a basketball court. The other side serves as one of the stadium’s entrances.

Volksstadion is home to Greifswalder FC. It was formed in 2015 through the merger of FC Pommern Greifswald and Greifswalder SV 04. Before them, teams like BSG Einheit Greifswald, BSG KKW Greifswald, and Greifswalder SC called this stadium home. This stadium has a rich football legacy. It has seen many local teams rise and fall, celebrating victories and enduring defeats.

On May 13, 2015, Volksstadion hosted a historic event. The final of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Cup, a tournament held since 1990, was played here for the first time. Hansa Rostock defeated TSG Neustrelitz 1-0 in front of 4,500 fans. This victory marked a significant moment in the stadium’s history. It showcased its ability to host important regional competitions.

Volksstadion also hosted a legendary match against Bayern Munich in 1997. A record-breaking crowd of 14,000 packed the stadium. They witnessed a friendly match that became part of Volksstadion’s folklore. This game remains the highest attended event in the stadium’s history. It cemented its status as a venue capable of drawing huge crowds. Volksstadion isn’t just a stadium. It’s a vibrant hub for sports, entertainment, and community events. It has served as a backdrop for historic moments, local rivalries, and even international friendlies. It has been a constant presence in Greifswald’s sporting and cultural life.
