“Fancy a dip?” That’s the unspoken question as we stand before the Volksbad Limmer. This public pool offers a nostalgic escape from the everyday. It is located idyllically in the Leinewiesen in Hanover. The Volksbad Limmer is more than just a swimming spot. It is a place with a story that stretches back almost a century.
In 1925, the Arbeiter sportverein Freier Wassersport Hannover Linden built this pool. They constructed it in a disused gravel pit as an open-air bath. The original Volksbad Limmer featured a 100-meter pool and extensive lawns. The pool suffered damage during the Second World War. It was later rebuilt in 1950. The Volksbad Limmer took on its current form after renovations in 1975.
Today, the Volksbad Limmer features a 50 x 22.5-meter swimming pool. There is also a non-swimmer area measuring 22.5 x 12.5 meters with two slides. Two table tennis tables provide additional entertainment. A football field and a large sunbathing area of approximately 7000 square meters invite you to relax. A kiosk is also available for refreshments.
The Volksbad Limmer is managed privately by Waspo98. It is the most successful swimming club in Northern Germany. The club takes its responsibility seriously. They teach children, young people, and adults how to swim. Waspo98 stands for tolerance and diversity.
For almost 100 years, the Volksbad Limmer has offered everyone the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed day in the open-air swimming pool for little money.
The atmosphere here is unique. There is no lifeguard running around with a whistle. Jumping from the edge of the pool is not prohibited. Mutual respect is the order of the day and it works well.
The water quality is excellent thanks to modern technology. The water temperature is around 23 degrees Celsius. The Volksbad Limmer also has a restaurant. It offers simple snacks such as fries, curry sausage, drinks, ice cream and sweets.
The water polo players from Waspo compete for the title in the Bundesliga every year. They train at the Volksbad Limmer.
