A large 170-square-meter outdoor space soars six meters high. Inside you’ll find climbing trees water features and even root stumps. The designers meticulously recreated the Keas’ natural New Zealand habitat. Rocks pebbles grasses and ferns transport you to the birds’ homeland. Notice the clever design. A unique airlock system ensures the Keas remain safely within their spacious home. Only one gate opens at a time. This prevents any accidental escapes. Why so much concrete and steel? Keas have powerful beaks. They can chew through even the thickest wood. This aviary was a significant project. The Erfurt Zoopark Friends Association funded the 195000-euro construction. Completed in 2014 it represents their largest undertaking. Originally two male Keas Maurice and Klaus resided here. A female joined them later. The aviary was groundbreaking.
