In the grand tapestry of Saint Petersburg, Vokzal 1853 stands as a testament to time. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. Vokzal 1853 is the largest food mall in Russia and Europe. It is also a vibrant event venue. This wasn’t always the case. Vokzal 1853 started as a bustling railway station. It connected Saint Petersburg to Warsaw and beyond.

Let’s journey back to 1853. Picture Tsar Nicholas I decreeing the construction of the S.Peterburgo-Varshavskaya railway. He envisioned a direct link to his Gatchina residence. The first Vokzal 1853 building emerged. It was a symbol of progress and imperial connection.

By 1862, the railway extended to Warsaw. A branch reached Prussia. Vokzal 1853 became Russia’s gateway to Europe. The station received a grand makeover. A magnificent stained-glass window and clock tower graced its facade. They echoed the grandeur of European town halls. These town halls served as central public hubs.

Fast forward to the First World War. Vokzal 1853 became a poignant arrival point. Trains brought wounded soldiers home. A dedicated tram line transported them from the platform. During the October Revolution, the station offered sanctuary. Workers defending the city sought refuge within its walls.

The Second World War brought devastation. The front line was a mere ten kilometers away. Vokzal 1853 endured constant shelling. In 1949, it underwent extensive restoration. New vestibules and waiting rooms were added. Lush green spaces bloomed around the reborn Vokzal 1853. A monument to Lenin replaced the once-proud stained-glass window. A symbol of a changing era.

The Soviet era brought a surprising threat. Demolition loomed over Vokzal 1853. Plans to merge Izmailovsky and Novoizmailovsky Prospects into a single highway put the station in jeopardy. Ironically, the Lenin monument saved it. Demolishing the monument was deemed too audacious.

In 2001, Vokzal 1853 embraced a new role. The Museum of Railway Equipment opened on its platforms. This museum is dedicated to engineer V.V. Chubarov. He was the head of the October Railway. Later that year, train service ended. An extensive renovation began. Vokzal 1853 transformed into the Varshavsky Express shopping and entertainment complex. The architect G. Bartoli designed this new incarnation.

Today, Vokzal 1853 thrives. It has been reborn as a vibrant food mall. It has become one of the city’s premier event locations. The rejuvenated Vokzal 1853 is a landmark. It represents Saint Petersburg’s unique blend of history and modernity.
