“A warehouse?” you might think, looking at the Voice and Opera Center. But don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you. This building, located at 104 South 1386 East in Salt Lake City, is a vital organ of Utah Opera’s creative heart. The Voice and Opera Center wasn’t always an opera hub. Utah Opera, originally founded in 1978, purchased this building, a former electronics warehouse, in 1995. They transformed it into a dynamic space for rehearsals, administration, and the creation and storage of costumes and sets. Over time, the Voice and Opera Center expanded significantly. The original 38,700 square feet were remodeled, and an additional 30,000 square feet were added. Now, imagine a vast rehearsal space, a bustling workshop where sets are designed and built, another dedicated to the intricate craft of costume and wig making, and an expansive storage area filled with costumes and sets. There’s even a dedicated dance rehearsal space and, of course, the administrative offices that keep everything running smoothly. Utah Opera frequently rents out its sets and costumes to other opera companies across the US, making the Voice and Opera Center a vital resource for the national opera scene.
