Did you know, just east of Engelsby, lies a hidden gem called Vogelsang? Vogelsang isn’t your typical bustling city district. It’s a tranquil, mostly agricultural area. It’s a vital green lung for Flensburg. Vogelsang is a crucial part of a green corridor. This corridor stretches from Flensburg harbor, through Lautrupsbachtal and Adelby. It continues through Vogelsang itself, then on to Blocksberg and Tremmeruper Wald. Finally, it reaches Glücksburg Castle. Vogelsang’s history dates back to the Neolithic period. Jakob Röschmann documented three burial mounds from this era in the 1960s. The first documented mention of Vogelsang dates back to the 15th century. In 1910, Vogelsang, along with Trögelsby, became part of Flensburg. Today, you can reach Vogelsang farm via Vogelsang lane. This lane was built in the 1980s. A wider lane, Trögelsby Hof, leads west to Trögelsby. It also leads east towards the Flensburg transmitter. These lanes also provide access to the Weesries forest to the north. From Weesries, via Weesrieser Weg, you can reach the Blocksberg area. Then continue past Kauslund, all the way to Fördewald. To the south, you can reach the Meierhof and Tarup. You can also travel to the rural suburb of Maasbüll and the village of Rüllschau. The small stream Taerbek also flows through Vogelsang. Near Twedt at the edge of Vogelsang is a riding stable. The Flensburg Riding Club Engelsby/Twedt often uses Vogelsang for their rides. The area is officially designated as the Vogelsang-Trögelsby protected landscape area. The protected area extends slightly further south towards Tarup. It ends near the Kiel-Flensburg railway line. The actual boundaries of Vogelsang are not clearly defined. So its perceived size can vary depending on who you ask.
