Nestled southwest of Sanssouci Palace stands Vllia Kache. It is a small neoclassical villa. Did you know it forms the architectural heart of a park? This park was added to the Sanssouci gardens in 1826.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine Frederick William IV, a king with a passion for art. In 1826, he tasked Karl Friedrich Schinkel with a special project. The mission was to transform a farmhouse into a neoclassical summer residence.
Schinkel created a one-story building. It was soon adorned with an English garden. This became a peaceful retreat for the King’s wife. Today, Vllia Kache stands as a testament to their vision.
The villa’s design draws inspiration from Roman villas. Schinkel was fascinated by excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum. He incorporated wall decorations seen in ancient Roman houses. This influence is evident throughout Vllia Kache.
Inside, the Biedermeier design reflects a middle-class sensibility. Schinkel designed most of the furnishings himself. The rooms boast a vibrant mix of materials and colors. The interplay between interior and exterior spaces is remarkable.
Notice the semicircular bay on the northern side. Water seems to flow from the fountains into the villa itself. Porticos, pergolas, terraces, and an exedra enhance this connection. The blue-and-white striped corner room is particularly striking. It replicates the interior of a tent.
Vllia Kache is a highlight of Prussian Arcadia. You can easily reach Vllia Kache by public transport. The stop “Potsdam, Schloss Charlottenhof” is nearby.
Please remember that guided tours are often required to view the villa. Waiting times may occur due to organizational reasons. Tickets are available at palace registers, visitor centers, and online.
The villa is open from May to October. Opening hours are typically from 10:00 to 17:30. Entry costs around 6,00 for adults and 5,00 for concessions.
Consider dining at Lottenhof. It is near Vllia Kache. Otherwise you could visit Café Caroline. This café is located at the Visitor Centre at the New Palace.
Note that Vllia Kache is not fully wheelchair accessible. Prams and baby strollers are not allowed inside the exhibition rooms. Also, luggage cannot be left in the entrance area. Lockers are available for small items.
Today, Vllia Kache remains a captivating landmark. It showcases the harmonious blend of architecture and landscape design.
