Dive into a world of wonder here at the Vivarium in Chemnitz. This unique house holds a fascinating collection of amphibians. The Vivarium is home to over 80 different amphibian species. This makes it a standout attraction. You’ll only find such diversity in a few places around the globe.
The Tierpark Chemnitz, established in 1964, is dedicated to preserving threatened species. Our Vivarium plays a crucial role in this mission. It provides a specialized environment for these delicate creatures.
In 2015, the Vivarium achieved a notable success. It marked the first successful breeding of small Sedge Frogs in a German zoo. These frogs are not well-studied. This achievement highlights the Vivarium’s expertise in amphibian care.
Recently, the Vivarium welcomed a new rare species. The Loja Pocket Frog arrived from Karlsruhe. Only Chemnitz and Karlsruhe keep this species in Europe. Female Pocket Frogs carry their eggs in a pouch on their backs. The Loja Pocket Frog is unique. Its pouch opens to the rear. The mother carries the eggs until they become tadpoles. Then she releases them into calm waters.
The Loja Pocket Frog faces threats in its native Ecuador. Habitat loss and pesticide use endanger the species. The IUCN lists it as vulnerable. This makes breeding programs like ours essential. Amphibians are the most threatened vertebrates worldwide. Our work here directly contributes to their survival.
The Tierpark Chemnitz encompasses 10 hectares. It houses around 1,300 animals from about 250 species. The Vivarium is a key feature. It attracts visitors and supports conservation efforts. The park also includes the Wildgatter Oberrabenstein since 1995. This adds another 35 hectares of woodland. It provides a habitat for around 75 animals of 15 species.
Our commitment extends beyond display. We actively participate in about 25 conservation breeding programs. We collaborate with other zoos and research facilities. Together, we strive to protect endangered species.
Consider supporting our efforts. The Tierparkfreunde Chemnitz e.V. helps manage animal sponsorships. Direct donations are also welcome. Most importantly, respect our animals. Do not feed or disturb them. Enjoy their beauty responsibly.
The Vivarium isn’t just a display of animals. It is a center for education and conservation. It promotes awareness of biodiversity. It highlights the importance of protecting our planet’s delicate ecosystems. Take your time here today. Discover the wonders of the amphibian world. Appreciate the critical work being done to protect these amazing creatures for generations to come.
