“Did you know that the Shri Vishwakarma Mandir in Pahadganj is believed to stand on land used for constructing Indraprasth by May, Vishwakarma’s son, during the Mahabharat era?” This temple has deep roots. It blends history and spirituality.
The Shri Vishwakarma Mandir is one of India’s most ancient temples. Legend says the area was once a part of the Khandav jungle. Yudhishthir requested May to build Indraprasth here. An ancient well still provides water for drinking. A giant Peepul tree stands with a periphery of 3 meters.
This place holds spiritual significance. Shri Sumbhargiri and Baba Nangpal Ji gained special perception here. A monastery was built. It houses a Lord Vishwakarma idol and Shivling.
In March 1783, a Sikh battalion of 30000 was camped near Kashmiri Gate. Maharaja Jassa Singh Jangid led this army. After attacking Delhi, Maharaja Jassa Singh met with Badshah Shah Alam. Shah Alam gifted him money. It was decided Sikh places would be returned with lease deeds for statues. The army camped at Tees Hazari.
Maharaja Jassa Singh knew of a small Lord Vishwakarma temple. It was two to three miles away in the Arawali Hills. He prayed there. He offered rupees received from Shah Alam. On the return, sweets were distributed near Teli Bada. This made the small bridge renowned as Mithai Pool. Maharaja Jassa Singh took three cannons and a historical stone. Mughal kings swore as Emperor on this stone. Today, it is in Ramgarhia Burj at Amritsar.
Seeing the small monastery the Vishwakarma Samaj founded a new building in 1864. Financial issues slowed construction. In 1903, a new Lord Vishwakarma idol was founded. This was with the help of Sh. Jamna Das Contractor and Sh. Ram Chandra Jaipuria. Donations were collected. In 1921, the temple was renovated.
Lord Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrated each year. It takes place on Magh Shukla Trayodshi. Lord Vishwakarma Pooja and Annakoot happen on Kartik Shukla Ekam. After some time, the volunteer’s courage faded. This led to the temple’s bad condition. In 1931, a management committee was formed.
In January 1939, Pt. Jagannath was appointed temple committee secretary. He appointed Pt. Makkhan Lal Angira as the priest. The temple progressed. It became an inspiration for Jangid Brahmins. Each Amavsya for Lord Vishwakarma and each Purnima for Satya Narayan Katha were celebrated. Other festivals were also celebrated.
In 1945, the samiti was registered. It was named Shri Vishwakarma Mandir Committee. The registration number is S-256. The samiti has been looking after the temple since.
In 1991, a Shobha Yatra was organized. It was from Jangid Brahmin Dharmshala Karol Bagh to the temple. A Lord Vishwakarma Jhanki proceeded with elephants, horses, and music.
