Did you know that the Virginia Robinson Gardens were once a barren stretch of barley? Today this six-and-a-half acre estate stands as a testament to the vision of Virginia and Harry Robinson. It’s more than just a garden. It’s the first estate in Beverly Hills a living museum and a captivating journey through time.

Imagine the Robinsons arriving in 1911. They found a golf course under construction amidst vast empty tracts of land. They fell in love with a hilltop view. The full moon illuminated the scene. Harry purchased the land that very day. Virginia’s father designed and built their 6000-square-foot home. It initially lacked the hedges and fences. Privacy wasn’t a concern. Nobody else lived in Beverly Hills yet.

Virginia Robinson became known as the first lady of Beverly Hills. She entertained royalty including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Hollywood stars such as Mary Pickford and Mae West were frequent guests. Her parties were legendary. She hosted several a week. A staff of twelve helped her pull off these grand events.

Over five decades the Robinsons transformed the landscape. They created five distinct gardens. One is the largest king palm forest in the Northern Hemisphere. The Italian Terrace Garden is another highlight. It features a beautiful water system inspired by the Alhambra in Spain. The Musical Stairs are a unique touch. Water flowing down the steps plays a unique melody.

Harry died in 1932. Virginia poured her grief into completing the gardens as a tribute. She wrote letters to her late husband seeking his advice. She even continued to host lavish parties. These were often for charity. Some were large affairs. Others were intimate gatherings in a garden nook.

Virginia Robinson’s legacy extends far beyond her parties. She served on the Board of Directors of J W Robinson. This was rare for women of her time. She passed away in 1977. She bequeathed her estate to Los Angeles County. It’s now jointly run by the county and the Friends of Robinson Gardens. The gardens remain a stunning example of landscape design. They also offer a glimpse into the life of a Beverly Hills pioneer. They stand as a timeless reminder of Virginia and Harry’s love and vision.
