Virginia Airport, a vital hub for general aviation, sits nestled just 10 kilometers northeast of Durban. It’s more than just a runway; it’s a training ground for aspiring pilots, a launching point for charter flights, and a historical landmark with a rich past. Virginia Airport wasn’t always here. Its story begins at Stamford Hill Aerodrome, which, by the mid-20th century, was struggling to accommodate both commercial airlines and the growing number of light aircraft. The need for a dedicated space for general aviation became clear, leading to the search for a new location. In 1959, Virginia Airport opened its doors, a much-needed haven for light aircraft. The grand opening was marked by an air race culminating at the newly christened airport, a fitting tribute to its aviation-centric purpose. Initially, only two hangars were relocated from Stamford Hill, those same structures still standing as silent witnesses to the airport’s growth. Virginia Airport is home to the Durban Wings Club, one of South Africa’s oldest flying clubs, adding another layer to its historical significance. The airport has weathered its share of storms, quite literally. Its proximity to the ocean makes every takeoff and landing a thrilling experience, earning it the affectionate nickname “HMS Virginia”. It has also faced the threat of closure, with plans for redevelopment surfacing in 2018. But the strong ties to the aviation community and the airport’s vital role in pilot training helped secure its future. Virginia Airport was once the proud host of the Durban Airshow. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns surrounding the proximity of the crowd line to the runway, the show was canceled for a time. It eventually returned in a more limited capacity, demonstrating the airport’s resilience and adaptability. Today, Virginia Airport continues to buzz with activity, a testament to its enduring importance in Durban’s aviation landscape. The single asphalt runway, measuring 925 by 22 meters, has witnessed countless takeoffs and landings, each one carrying a story. From training flights to charter operations, the airport serves as a dynamic gateway to the skies above Durban.
