The story of this tree began when residents spotted a knot resembling Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is an icon of the Virgin Mary celebrated in Mexico. Some say the likeness appeared after a tragic accident. A man from Mexico died in a car crash nearby.
Eva Copan-Titla noticed the image first. She told West New York Mayor Dr. Felix Roque. He, facing his own troubles, had barricades put up to protect the site.
