Have you ever walked through a place that felt like a beehive? Welcome to Virgen del Cortijo a residential area in Madrid’s Hortaleza district. Its hexagonal streets and plazas earned it the nickname “La Colmena” the beehive. Imagine a vast empty space in northern Madrid. In 1966 the Madrid city council approved a plan to transform this into the vibrant neighborhood we see today. This plan saw the creation of Virgen del Cortijo. The development was a multi-phased project undertaken by the Pryconsa real estate company. By the late 1970s the residential buildings were complete. But Virgen del Cortijo wasn’t just about homes. It also housed three cement factories and numerous warehouses. The area later transitioned from industrial to office spaces. Today companies like BMW AXA Pascual and NTT Data have offices here. The main headquarters of the BOE the official state bulletin is also located in Virgen del Cortijo. A modern shopping center complete with CINESA cinemas stands where once industrial buildings operated. The initial years however weren’t easy. Residents faced significant challenges. These included a lack of telephones and public transportation. A long-standing resident campaign finally led to the closure of two noisy cement factories in 2007. The closure of Gas Natural facilities in the 1990s further improved the environment. Today Virgen del Cortijo is a thriving community. It boasts schools churches health centers and even a senior citizens’ residence. Despite its initial struggles Virgen del Cortijo is a testament to urban transformation. It is a bustling neighborhood. It successfully transitioned from an industrial area to a modern residential and commercial hub. It’s a remarkable story of resilience and adaptation in the heart of Madrid. So let’s explore this fascinating neighborhood together and discover more of its hidden gems.
