What secrets lie hidden beneath the waves, whispered on the ocean breeze? Right here, before the Virgen de Candelaria, those secrets echo through time. The Virgen de Candelaria, a beacon of faith for the Canary Islands, stands as a testament to a history both miraculous and mysterious. This shrine marks a place where, long before the Spanish arrived, the indigenous Guanches already held this very spot sacred.

Legend tells of two Guanche goatherds who stumbled upon a statue on the beach. It depicted the Virgin Mary, a child in one hand and a green candle in the other. Fear turned to awe as they tried to interact with the statue. One’s arm became paralyzed throwing a stone. The other, attempting to stab the statue, only injured himself. This event led them to believe that the statue held a power beyond their understanding.

The statue, later named Virgen de Candelaria, was moved to a cave, the Cueva de Achbinico. It became a place of worship for the Guanches, although they did not yet comprehend her Christian significance. The statue itself holds another mystery. Carved into its drapery are strange sequences of letters. To this day, their meaning remains unsolved, a puzzle left behind by history.

The Virgen de Candelaria, a symbol of the merging of cultures and faiths, reminds us that some stories are timeless. She stands as a symbol of the Canary Islands’ resilience, her story forever intertwined with the land and its people.
