Was it a mirage? Out on the Bay of Cartagena, a shimmering figure rises from the water. This, my friends, is the Virgen del Carmen. She’s not just a statue. She’s the protector of Cartagena, a beacon of hope and resilience. The Virgen del Carmen has watched over this bay for over forty years. She’s a symbol of the city’s deep-rooted faith and maritime heritage. Originally crafted in the 1950s by Italian sculptor Luisi Heredi, this 15-meter marble Madonna had a difficult journey to her Colombian home. She had to be disassembled and shipped in pieces. Finally, in 1983, she was installed, a proud guardian at the bay’s entrance. But her story doesn’t end there. Tragedy struck in 2015. A fierce storm raged, and a bolt of lightning shattered the Virgen. The city mourned. The image of their fractured protector was heartbreaking. But Cartageneros are not easily deterred. Divers from the Colombian Navy spent days retrieving the scattered fragments from the seabed. The Virgen’s head and the child she held were miraculously almost intact. The rest, however, was badly damaged. The task of restoring her fell to Carlos Enrique Rodríguez Arango, a local artist. He painstakingly pieced her back together using traditional Renaissance techniques and Italian Carrara marble. He even recreated her missing crown, lost in the storm, using old photographs as his guide. On December 7, 2016, just in time for the Fiesta de las Velitas, the Virgen del Carmen was returned to her watery pedestal. Restored and even more beloved, she stands as a testament to the power of faith and the resilience of Cartagena. Each year on July 16th, the bay fills with boats. The faithful come to honor their patroness, the Virgen del Carmen, ensuring her story continues to inspire generations to come.
