Has anyone ever told you about the “Jesus Freaks” of Santa Monica Beach? Their story intertwines with the very foundation of Vineyard Church Los Angeles. In the 1970s, amidst the cultural shifts of the Jesus People Movement, a group of young people began experiencing profound encounters with Jesus right on the sandy shores. This spiritual awakening resonated with the hippie culture’s search for God, a search that transcended drugs, sex, and rock ‘n’ roll. This group, initially a small Bible study led by Kenn Gulliksen, soon blossomed into the first Vineyard Church in 1974. Vineyard Church Los Angeles became a hub, attracting not only everyday people but also notable figures like Bob Dylan and T-Bone Burnett. Vineyard Church Los Angeles, the original Vineyard, started planting other churches as early as 1975. The name “Vineyard,” inspired by Isaiah 27:2-3 and John 15:5, became the official designation for this growing fellowship. By 1982, several Vineyard churches had formed a loose network. John Wimber, another influential figure who also started at Calvary Chapel, joined forces with Kenn Gulliksen. Under Wimber’s leadership, the network solidified, officially becoming the Association of Vineyard Churches in 1982. Wimber’s theological influence profoundly shaped Vineyard Church Los Angeles and the entire movement. He emphasized the kingdom of God and encouraged the active presence of all the biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit within the church. Vineyard Church Los Angeles, along with other Vineyard churches, became known for its vibrant worship, emphasis on the Holy Spirit, and commitment to healing and prophecy. Today, Vineyard Church Los Angeles continues to carry its rich legacy, seeking revival and spiritual renewal within the city, while remaining part of a global movement impacting countless lives.
