It will soon be open for tours.
Vine City thrived in the wake of the Great Atlanta Fire of 1907. Many African Americans relocated here. They established businesses and built a robust middle class. Paschal’s restaurant became a hub for civil rights activists in the 1950s. The neighborhood was a vibrant center of Black culture and commerce. It was a testament to the power of community.
Sadly the construction of the Georgia Dome caused displacement. It damaged the community spirit. It led to hardship and decline. The area suffered like many others in Atlanta during that time. Yet Vine City persevered.
Today Vine City is on the rise again. It’s near the Atlanta University Center. This includes historically Black colleges like Clark Atlanta. Morehouse and Spelman. It’s also near the Westside BeltLine. It has a MARTA station. This provides easy access to downtown. The new Rodney Cook Sr. Park. opened in 2021. This is a 16-acre urban oasis. The park provides a space for recreation and stormwater retention. It’s a symbol of renewal and hope.
Restaurants like the Busy Bee Cafe. a legendary Atlanta soul food diner. still stand. It has served everyone from local workers to Martin Luther King Jr. and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Busy Bee is a piece of living history. It continues to serve delicious Southern cuisine. Vine City is a neighborhood of contrasts. A place where the scars of the past remain.
