Ever wondered about Denmark’s largest green education department? That’s Vilvorde. Right here in Roskilde Vilvorde stands as a testament to horticultural history. It began its life in 1875 as Denmark’s first horticultural college. Founded by Stephan Nyeland near Ordrup Krat it was named after a Belgian town. Vilvorde’s early days weren’t without drama. Just months after opening a fire destroyed the original building. Undeterred Nyeland rebuilt it thanks to King Christian IX. Imagine seeing the flames from Bernstorff Castle. Can you picture that?

For years Vilvorde thrived. Students lived on campus. But times changed. Financial difficulties forced a change in 1958. A portion of the land was sold for housing. Yet Vilvorde lived on. A group of gardeners took over. They modernized the school. They even promised to update the teaching methods. This renewed Vilvorde. It continued to evolve. It moved to Tolløse Slot. Later in 1991 it became part of Roskilde Technical School. It finally settled in its current location south of Roskilde. Close to the Holbæk motorway.

Today Vilvorde offers various green courses. It boasts impressive facilities. Think greenhouses plant nurseries. Even animal facilities. There are sports fields too. Everything supports its many educational programs. From landscaping to floristry. Students benefit from the excellent study environment. They enjoy practical training. They also receive extensive support. Vilvorde’s legacy is impressive. It’s a place where Denmark’s horticultural future is shaped. It’s a story of resilience innovation and dedication to the green arts. From its humble beginnings to its current status Vilvorde continues to grow. Its history is rich and its future bright. So take a moment to appreciate Vilvorde. It represents a deep commitment to environmental education.
