In 1908, a small village southwest of Montreal took on a new name: Ville-Émard. This seemingly simple act marked a turning point, forever linking the area with Joseph-Ulric Émard, a prominent figure whose vision shaped the neighbourhood’s destiny. Ville-Émard wasn’t just a name; it was a testament to the ambition and foresight of a man who saw potential in the quiet countryside. Émard, a lawyer, businessman, and politician, along with his business partner Frederick Debartzch Monk, had big plans for this area. They envisioned a thriving suburban community just beyond the bustling city limits of Montreal. Their dream began to materialize as they subdivided land and sold properties, laying the foundation for what Ville-Émard is today. The arrival of industries like the Canadian Tube & Steel Company and the Canadian Car & Foundry along the Lachine Canal further solidified Ville-Émard’s growth, providing much-needed employment opportunities for its new residents. As Ville-Émard flourished, essential municipal services sprung up along Monk Boulevard. Shops opened, homes were built, and a community began to thrive. The establishment of the Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours parish in 1906, under Curé Jean-Moïse Jolicoeur, added a spiritual dimension to the burgeoning community. The development of Ville-Émard was rapid. By 1910, the village, along with its neighbour Côte-Saint-Paul, was annexed to the city of Montreal. Émard himself became an alderman, continuing to serve the community he helped create. Ville-Émard continued to transform throughout the 20th century. It evolved from an industrial hub to a more residential area, witnessing the rise and fall of businesses, the construction of new homes, and the arrival of the metro in 1978, connecting it more closely to the heart of Montreal. Today, as you stand in Ville-Émard, you’re not just in a neighbourhood. You’re standing in a living testament to the vision of Joseph-Ulric Émard and Frederick Debartzch Monk. Their entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community building are etched into the very fabric of this place. Ville-Émard is a reminder that even the quietest corners can hold the seeds of remarkable transformation.
