La Jolla’s dramatic coastline is breathtaking. It boasts incredible views. It is no wonder La Jolla is one of California’s most popular beach destinations. Surrounded by the ocean on three sides it is truly a jewel. The steep slopes of Mount Soledad provide a dramatic backdrop. The village’s luxurious hotels and casual coastal retreats offer a variety of accommodations. Upscale shops boutiques and world-class restaurants add to its charm.

La Jolla’s history is rich and fascinating. It was once known as mat kulaaxuuy meaning land of holes by the local Kumeyaay Native Americans. The name La Jolla may be a Spanish transcription of this or it might come from la joya meaning the jewel. This nickname aptly describes the area.

In the 1880s a real estate boom spurred further development. The San Diego Pacific Beach and La Jolla Railway connected La Jolla to the rest of San Diego. This transformed La Jolla into a popular resort destination. The railway even built facilities to attract visitors. Cottages and bungalows popped up above La Jolla Cove. A temporary tent city was erected every summer. Two of these cottages the Red Roost and the Red Rest still stand today. They are the oldest buildings in La Jolla still on their original sites.

Ellen Browning Scripps a journalist and publisher was a major force in La Jolla’s development. She lived in La Jolla for the last 35 years of her life. She was a philanthropist and commissioned many of the village’s notable buildings. These buildings are now on the National Register of Historic Places or are considered historical landmarks. She also founded Scripps Memorial Hospital and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
