Today. About 14000 Vietnamese Americans call Village de L’Est home. It’s one of the densest Vietnamese enclaves in the United States. Originally called Versailles. After the Versailles Arms apartment complex. The first Vietnamese immigrants settled there. The children of those first immigrants. They grew up in New Orleans. They continue to enrich the city. The community remains strong. Bound by language shared experiences and close family ties.

Hurricane Katrina tested the community’s strength. The storm brought devastation. But the Vietnamese people of Village de L’Est showed incredible resilience. They rebuilt their lives. They rebuilt much of their neighborhood. This happened even as government assistance lagged. They faced additional challenges. The threat of a nearby landfill caused protests and legal battles.

The ongoing redevelopment of Versailles Apartments continues to be a source of discussion. Some residents oppose the demolition of the original structures.
