Envision a grand residence, bathed in the soft glow of the Potsdam sun. This, my friends, is the Villa von Kleist. A silent sentinel on Berliner Strasse, the Villa von Kleist whispers tales of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the ebb and flow of history, having witnessed Potsdam’s transformation through the centuries. The Villa von Kleist first graced Potsdam’s landscape around 1824. It was originally built for Lieutenant Colonel Carl von Malachowski, commander of the Leib-Garde-Husaren-Regiment. Though the architect remains shrouded in mystery, the villa’s design hints at the influence of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, perhaps through Carl Hampel, an architect in the War Ministry. Originally a single-story structure with a pitched roof, the Villa von Kleist featured two subtle corner projections framing the doors. Two carriage houses with steep pitched roofs stood in the rear courtyard. The villa changed hands several times over the years. In 1894, a central projection was added. Then, a pivotal year for the villa arrived: 1910. Ewald Freiherr von Kleist, a royal chamberlain, acquired the property and commissioned architect Otto Rehnig for a significant remodel. This is where the villa truly took on its present form. Rehnig expanded the central section with a polygonal bay window, transforming the roof into a mansard roof with gables and adding a stair tower to the rear. Years later, in 1924, the estate became the property of Otto Wrede. After World War II, the villa served various institutions, including the Garantie und Kreditbank, the city of Potsdam, and the Deutsche Investitionsbank. After German reunification, the Deutsche Bundesbank used it as a branch and later as a seminar building. Today, the Villa von Kleist houses the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), a testament to its adaptability and enduring presence in Potsdam.
