In 1928, a grand dream took shape on Ocean Boulevard. A majestic structure began to rise, destined to become a beacon of elegance and luxury. This, my friends, is the Villa Riviera. The Villa Riviera was no ordinary apartment building. It was envisioned as a residential cooperative, where residents would own their units and enjoy a lifestyle comparable to the finest hotels. Imagine stepping into a world of high-speed elevators, a 100-car garage with a car elevator for the valets, and a rooftop terrace offering breathtaking views of the Pacific. The Villa Riviera was designed by architect Richard D. King, who masterfully blended Tudor Gothic, French, and Italian Renaissance styles. The result was a 16-story masterpiece, crowned with a verdigris copper roof and adorned with fierce-looking grotesques. These mythical creatures, perched along the higher floors, add a touch of whimsy and intrigue. In 1929, the Villa Riviera opened its doors, hosting a lavish party to welcome its first residents. For a time, it was the tallest private building in Southern California, a symbol of prosperity and sophistication. But the Great Depression cast a shadow over the grand dream. Demand for luxury apartments dwindled, and the building’s ownership changed hands. In 1933, the Villa Riviera faced its first major test when a powerful earthquake struck Long Beach. While other buildings crumbled, the Villa stood firm, thanks to its robust steel frame and innovative foundation. It’s said that Admiral Richard H. Leigh, commander-in-chief of the U.S. Fleet, calmly returned to his suite after the initial tremors, unfazed by the continuing aftershocks. The Villa Riviera’s resilience during the earthquake cemented its reputation as a structure built to last. Over the years, the Villa Riviera has played host to a colorful cast of characters. Silent film star Norma Talmadge once graced its penthouse with her presence. During World War II, it became a haven for U.S. Navy officers, its tower serving as a lookout point for enemy ships. The first Miss Universe Pageant even used the Villa Riviera as a backdrop for its photos and parade in 1952. Today, the Villa Riviera remains a coveted address, its apartments transformed into condominiums. As you gaze upon its majestic facade, remember the stories whispered within its walls. From the Roaring Twenties to the present day, the Villa Riviera has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, standing as a testament to the enduring allure of elegance and resilience.
