“Thousands of pounds worth of heroin flowed through this mansion each week,” whispered a tour guide to his group, eyes wide with awe. We’re standing before Villa Nellcôte, a grand Belle Epoque mansion overlooking the sparkling waters of the French Riviera. It’s hard to imagine the wild scenes this serene facade once concealed. In 1971, Villa Nellcôte became a haven for rock and roll royalty, the Rolling Stones. Fleeing exorbitant British taxes, Keith Richards, the band’s enigmatic guitarist, rented this sprawling 16-room villa.

The Stones weren’t seeking a quiet retreat though. They transformed Nellcôte’s basement into a makeshift recording studio, the birthplace of their iconic album “Exile on Main Street.” But the recording process was far from conventional. The sessions were fuelled by a haze of illicit substances, attracting a colorful cast of characters including musicians, artists, and even a few notorious figures. The villa was a whirlwind of late-night jams, decadent parties, and a constant flow of visitors.

The hedonistic atmosphere had its downsides. Inter-band tensions ran high, fueled by Keith’s escalating drug use and a rumored affair between Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg, Richards’ partner. Despite the chaos, or perhaps because of it, “Exile on Main Street” became regarded as one of the Rolling Stones’ finest works, capturing the raw energy and decadence of their time at Villa Nellcôte. By the end of 1971, the party was over. Legal troubles forced Richards and the band to leave their French paradise. The Villa stood silent once more, its walls whispering tales of a legendary rock and roll summer.
