A hidden oasis whispers secrets. Welcome to Villa Naselli Agliata. This stunning villa stands not far from Palermo’s historic heart. It sits in Villagrazia a former Ambleri district. The area lies nestled between the Oreto River and Mount Orecchiuta.

Villa Naselli Agliata boasts a rich history. Its name reflects the families who shaped its destiny. The Alliata or Agliata family owned it from the late 15th century. Later the Naselli counts of the Dukes of Gela took ownership. They remain its proud custodians.

The villa’s origins are ancient. Legend claims it was built upon Arab structures. These protected the Ambleri spring a source of crystal-clear water. This spring continues to flow in the villa’s garden. The name Ambleri itself comes from the Arabic ayn billawri meaning “crystalline source”.

Over the centuries the villa evolved. Each family added its touch. The current structure showcases the Nasellis’ influence. This reflects their style between the 18th and 20th centuries. The villa is a beautiful blend of architectural styles. It remains surrounded by a traditional Sicilian citrus grove. A 17th-century portal with the family crest marks the entrance.

The villa’s main house is impressive. It features a neo-Gothic tower and a stunning Baroque hanging garden. Lower buildings once served as stables and storehouses. One structure an original porticoed belvedere offers breathtaking views. Some 15th-century arches still stand as a testament to time. A neo-Gothic chapel added in the late 19th century completes the ensemble.

Villa Naselli Agliata’s Camera dello Scirocco is its most celebrated feature. Gerardo Alliata commissioned this hydraulic marvel in 1552. It’s a sophisticated water capture system from the Ambleri spring. But it was also a place to escape the summer heat. Vincenzo Di Giovanni’s Palermo Restaurato from 1613 describes its design. It remains unchanged to this day.

The Camera dello Scirocco is a network of tunnels under the garden. It has a barrel vault with light wells. A central rotunda topped by a conical tower leads to the spring. The water flows into a central channel feeding the aqueduct. This provided water for the surrounding citrus groves. Early 20th-century additions improved sanitation. This adaptation allowed the Nasellis to use the water for their private aqueduct.

Giovan Battista Alliata Gerardo’s brother made the Camera dello Scirocco famous. This extravagant knight of the Order of Saint John held lavish parties there. He decorated the space with rich fabrics orange and myrtle branches. His guests were Palermo’s high society.

Villa Naselli Agliata stands as a living testament to history and elegance. Its captivating story is etched in stone and water. It’s a true gem of Palermo’s countryside.
