One crisp autumn afternoon in the late 1700s, a vision took shape amidst the rolling hills of Burago di Molgora. Enrico Mylius, a prominent Milanese businessman and patron of the arts, envisioned a grand villa. This villa would become a sanctuary for intellectual and artistic pursuits. Thus began the story of Villa Mylius Oggioni. Villa Mylius Oggioni sits on a gentle rise, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Its imposing U-shaped structure, with outstretched wings, exudes a sense of timeless elegance. A grand iron gate, set between sturdy pillars, welcomes visitors to the courtyard. Here, the villa’s facade rises majestically. The central section, a three-story masterpiece crowned by a triangular pediment, is flanked by two-story wings. A hidden third level on the right wing adds a touch of architectural intrigue. The villa’s symmetrical porticos, each with five rounded arches supported by stone columns, create a sense of balance and harmony. Mylius, a man of discerning taste and a keen eye for beauty, spared no expense in creating his idyllic retreat. He adorned the villa’s interiors with exquisite frescoes, intricate stuccowork, and period furnishings. The ceilings boast decorative grisaille paintings, while the walls showcase romantic landscapes and genre scenes. Villa Mylius Oggioni was not merely a residence. It was a vibrant hub of intellectual and cultural exchange. Mylius, a close friend of literary giants like Alessandro Manzoni and Carlo Cattaneo, hosted salons that drew some of the brightest minds of the era. Discussions of art, literature, and philosophy filled the villa’s elegant rooms. The surrounding parkland, a verdant oasis stretching westward, provided a tranquil backdrop for contemplation and leisurely strolls. Mylius’ legacy extended beyond the villa’s walls. He was a pioneer in the textile industry. He introduced technological innovations to his Lombard mills and championed the education of his workers, recognizing their value in the success of his enterprises. After Mylius’ time, the villa passed through different hands. In 1921, it found a new chapter in its history when the Oggioni family acquired it. To this day, Villa Mylius Oggioni remains a private residence. It stands as a testament to the vision of its founder, a place where history and beauty intertwine.
