Peeking out from the Sherman Heights neighborhood, Villa Montezuma awaits. This Queen Anne-style mansion holds secrets and stories within its walls. It is more than just a building. It’s a portal to a past filled with music, mystery, and maybe even a few ghosts.

Villa Montezuma was built in 1887. It was a home for Jesse Shepard, a renowned composer also known as Francis Grierson. The brothers William and John High convinced Shepard to relocate here. They were wealthy ranchers. They were also members of the Spiritualist group to which Shepard belonged. They built the mansion and named it after the ship that brought Shepard to America.

Shepard only lived here for about a year. Then he moved to Paris and sold the house in late 1889. Villa Montezuma then passed through many owners. Some of them even met with financial ruin. Interestingly, Shepard himself later lost his money and popularity. He died in 1927 in an unusual way. He was playing piano at a friend’s house. Immediately after striking the last chord, he died suddenly of unknown causes.

Step inside Villa Montezuma and imagine the music. Envision the gas lamps casting shadows on the walls. Feel the energy of the spiritualist gatherings. Shepard’s spirit may still linger here. Some call Villa Montezuma the “Spook House”. People have reported strange occurrences. In one corner of the house, plants refuse to grow. Gardeners are baffled. There is even a secret passageway.

In 1970, the San Diego History Center purchased Villa Montezuma. The mansion had fallen into disrepair. The Friends of Villa Montezuma took charge of its maintenance. In 1972, it opened to the public as a museum. It became a popular wedding venue. However, it closed in 2006 due to safety concerns.

Restoration work has been ongoing since then. From 2015 free interior tours have been held quarterly. As of October 2021, the museum reopened for regular paid tours.

Walking through Villa Montezuma, you will notice its unique architectural features. Pacific American Decorative Company created the windows for the mansion. These details add to the grandeur of the Victorian era. The stained-glass windows cast colorful light. Secret passages whisper of hidden stories. The house is a true marvel.
