The year is 1585. Count Pirro I Visconti Borromeo, a man of discerning taste and grand vision, decides to transform his agricultural estate in Lainate. He envisions a retreat, a fusion of nature’s tranquility and artistic grandeur. Thus begins the story of Villa Litta, a testament to his ambition. Villa Litta, no mere country residence, was conceived as a “Tuscan Villa” near Milan. Pirro, a patron of the arts, engaged the most celebrated talents of Lombardy. Architect Martino Bassi, sculptors Francesco Brambilla the Younger and Marco Antonio Prestinari, and painters Camillo Procaccini and il Morazzone all answered his call. Their collective genius breathed life into Pirro’s vision, fashioning a masterpiece. The villa’s splendor unfolds through its frescoed halls, a dance of colors narrating tales from a bygone era. Giuseppe Levati, the 18th-century master, worked his magic, immortalizing moments in time on the walls. Yet, the true jewel in Villa Litta’s crown is the Nymphaeum, a water palace unlike any other in northern Italy. This symphony of water and art, completed between 1585 and 1589, is a testament to human ingenuity. Imagine strolling through its cool embrace, surrounded by intricate mosaics crafted from white and black pebbles, a spectacle unique in mosaic art history. Be careful, though, for hidden within its walls are playful water tricks, a legacy of the past that might surprise you with a splash! Villa Litta, a place where art, history, and nature intertwine.
