Gazing at this building, do you realize it once housed a future president? This is Villa Köhler. It stands as a testament to grand architecture and historical significance here in Hanover.

Villa Köhler is more than just a building. It is a symbol of an era. This Neorenaissance villa whispers stories of powerful figures and changing times.

Heinrich Köhler, a renowned architect, designed this villa for himself around 1893. He was a professor of architecture at the Technical University of Hanover. Köhler’s architectural style stood in contrast to Conrad Wilhelm Hase.

Köhler lived here for about ten years. The Villa Köhler is located at the corner of Am Holzgraben and Wedekindstraße. These streets have their own interesting pasts.

Am Holzgraben was officially named in 1845. It followed an old path along the Eilenriede forest. Wedekindstraße was created in 1894. It was named after the Wedekind family.

After Köhler’s death, his heirs rented out the Villa Köhler. In 1911, Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg rented the upper ground floor. Hindenburg later became President of Germany. For a time, the Villa Köhler was also known as Villa Hindenburg.

During Hindenburg’s time here, military regiments would march past. They played drums and trumpets. This was a common tribute to Hindenburg.

Even after Hindenburg went to war in 1914, he received birthday wishes here. In 1915, 4000 children brought him flowers. They decorated the house with self-made wreaths.

Other notable people lived near Hindenburg. A president of the Consistory lived upstairs. A director of the regional court also resided here.

In 1926, Johann Gundlach bought part of the building. He used it for his construction company. In 1976, the company expanded. It acquired the corner house and a neighboring building.

From 1986 to 2019, Gundlach rented part of Villa Köhler to an educational association. Today, the Gundlach company uses the building again.

Villa Köhler has witnessed much. It has been a home, a symbol of military respect and a business address. Its walls hold echoes of architects, generals and everyday citizens.

As you stand here, consider the layers of history within Villa Köhler. It is a reminder that even buildings can have stories to tell. The Villa Köhler stands as a proud landmark in Hanover’s Oststadt district.
