“The finest house in Texas” whispered the wind through the ancient oaks. This is Villa Finale. Right here in the heart of San Antonio’s King William Historic District stands a testament to perseverance and the enduring beauty of history.

Built in 1876 by Russel C Norton a successful hardware merchant Villa Finale wasn’t always the elegant Italianate mansion you see today. It began as a modest four-room home. The years brought changes. The neighborhood evolved. Owners came and went. A devastating flood in 1921 altered the fortunes of King William. Many wealthy German families left. Villa Finale became a boarding house. A shadow of its former glory.

Then in 1967 Walter Nold Mathis a civic leader and collector changed everything. Facing the demolition of his own home for a highway project he found Villa Finale. He saw its potential. He bought it for $37500.

For two years Mathis meticulously restored the home. His efforts extended beyond his own property. He purchased and partially restored up to fourteen more properties in King William. He sold them to preservation-minded individuals. His actions sparked a revitalization. King William is now a thriving historic urban neighborhood. Villa Finale stands as a symbol of his success.

Mathis was not only a preservationist but also a prodigious collector. His extensive collections fill Villa Finale. Over 12500 distinctive items are on display. Nineteenth and twentieth-century antiques silver ceramics fine art and books. Even a piece of Napoleona. His passion for collecting is evident in every room. Each item tells a story. A glimpse into a bygone era.

In 2004 Mathis bequeathed Villa Finale and its collections to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. His legacy lives on. The museum opened in 2010. Today Villa Finale remains a vibrant community hub. It hosts tours lectures workshops and family events. It is a place where the past comes alive. It is a place where history breathes. It is a place where you can step back in time. And appreciate the story of Villa Finale. A story of preservation community and the enduring power of one man’s vision.
