Imagine owning a camera in the late 1800s was like holding the future in your hands. Here we are at Villa Festge. It stands as a testament to an era of prosperity and ambition.

Villa Festge is located at Cyriakstraße 39 in Erfurt. This grand residence whispers stories of Karl Festge. He was a man who made his mark on Erfurt.

Karl Festge wasn’t just any photographer. He was a savvy businessman. Festge owned brickyards and speculated in real estate. These ventures made him a wealthy man.

In the late 19th century, the Cyriakstraße became one of Erfurt’s most desirable addresses. Karl Festge commissioned architect Eduard Kayser to design his dream home. Between 1897 and 1899, Villa Festge rose from the ground.

Notice the castle-like appearance of Villa Festge. Terraces, open stairways, and a belvedere adorn the structure. The sandstone facade features intricate details. Look closely and you will spot a camera. It is a nod to Festge’s profession.

Villa Festge was surrounded by a large park. It sloped down towards the street. The villa reflected the self-confidence of the upper middle class. This was during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm. They had wealth and wanted to show it.

Karl Festge lived here until his death in 1909. In 1912, the villa changed hands. Lamp manufacturer Stübgen became the new owner.

Later in 1946, Soviet forces seized the property. Villa Festge then served as a guest house.

Villa Festge stands as a reminder of Erfurt’s transformation. After 1871, the city expanded rapidly. Erfurt grew from 45,000 to 100,000 residents by 1906. The southwest district became home to the wealthy. They built impressive villas like this one.

Some find Villa Festge impressive and representative. Others consider it pretentious. Regardless, it is a significant architectural monument. It shows the aspirations of Erfurt’s elite. Villa Festge is more than a building. It is a time capsule. It encapsulates an era of growth, ambition, and transformation.
