Could a house breathe art? Here at Villa Esche, it seems so. Villa Esche isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the vision of Henry van de Velde, a pioneer of Art Nouveau. Commissioned in 1902 by Herbert Esche, a textile manufacturer, Villa Esche became van de Velde’s first architectural work in Germany. This marked a significant moment in his career, a stepping stone to his later renown. Van de Velde didn’t just design a house. He crafted a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art. Every detail, from the architecture to the interior to the surrounding park-like garden, was meticulously planned to create a harmonious whole. The Esche family, known for their patronage of the arts, clearly found a kindred spirit in van de Velde. Herbert Esche’s friendship with artists like Edvard Munch speaks volumes about his appreciation for creative expression. The villa has weathered its own share of history. It served as the seat of the Soviet military commander and later the Stasi secret police. Yet, it survived. Between 1998 and 2001, Villa Esche underwent a meticulous restoration. Today, it stands as a vibrant museum dedicated to van de Velde’s legacy. Inside, you can still find original furnishings from the Esche family, particularly in the former dining room and music salon. The upper floor houses a permanent exhibition showcasing van de Velde’s remarkable work. Even today, Villa Esche continues to serve as a meeting place for commerce, art, and culture.
