“Villa Elisa” is etched into the stone. Can you see it? This isn’t just a house. It is a statement of artistry and a testament to a pivotal era.

Welcome to Villa Elisa, a jewel of Art Nouveau architecture in Uccle. It stands as a proud example of Brussels’ rich architectural heritage. Villa Elisa was designed by Victor Taelemans in 1899. This was a time of great artistic innovation in Brussels.

Look at the facade. Notice how the white stone is punctuated by red brick bands. This creates a striking visual rhythm. The blue stone base adds a touch of grounded elegance.

Let’s focus on the entrance. The blue stone steps lead to a doorway. Above it sits a transom window. See how its white stone frame flares outward. It culminates in a subtle arch. To the right of the door, notice something special. The words “Villa Elisa” are carved into the stone. Beside it is the signature “Victor Taelemans Archte” in a very refined design.

Above the entrance on the first and second floors are more windows. Each is framed with the same attention to detail. The main section of Villa Elisa features a beautiful oriel window. This projects outward. It is supported by robust consoles adorned with geometric Art Nouveau patterns. Wrought iron grilles with geometric Art Nouveau motifs embellish the ground floor window. The oriel culminates in a balcony. The wrought iron railing also features geometric Art Nouveau designs.

The top level boasts a window. Its stone frame mirrors that of the entrance. It also finishes with a lowered arch. The facade culminates in a projecting cornice. It is supported by four corbels.

Villa Elisa is more than just a beautiful building. It is officially recognized for its importance. Since 2006, Villa Elisa has been listed as a historic monument. Villa Elisa is located on Winston Churchill Avenue. This area is known for its Art Nouveau buildings. Hotel Hannon, Hotel Vandenbroeck and the studio-house of sculptor Fernand Dubois are all nearby.

Victor Taelemans completed Villa Elisa in 1899. That was the same year as other Art Nouveau houses. They are located near the Squares district. These are on Philippe le Bon Street and Michel-Ange Avenue.

As you stand here, imagine the Brussels of the late 19th century. Villa Elisa embodies the spirit of Art Nouveau. Its elegant lines, floral motifs and thoughtful design reflect a desire to create beauty. It also reflects a desire to integrate art into everyday life. Villa Elisa is a reminder of Brussels’ golden age of architecture. It is a treasure. Its beauty continues to inspire.
