Was this idyllic countryside estate always meant to be a school? Right here, on this hill overlooking Florence, stands the grand Villa del Poggio Imperiale. It started life, much like many grand estates, as a nobleman’s house, a “casa da signore”. This Villa del Poggio Imperiale witnessed centuries of history, power shifts, and artistic transformations. The Baroncelli family started it all in the 15th century, but by the 16th century, it was bouncing between powerful families. The Pandolfini, the Salviati – they all had their turn until the Medici family swooped in. Cosimo I de’ Medici, a man known for his political maneuvering, claimed Villa del Poggio Imperiale and presented it as a gift to his daughter, Isabella. This wasn’t just any country home; it was a lavish retreat, a place for Isabella to hold court and surround herself with the leading intellectuals and artists of the time. Over the years, Villa del Poggio Imperiale was expanded and embellished, reflecting the ambitions and tastes of its owners. Grand Duchess Maria Maddalena of Austria had architect Giulio Parigi transform the villa, connecting it to the city with a grand boulevard. Her noble lineage inspired the name “Poggio Imperiale,” or “Imperial Hill.” The Villa even enjoyed a brief stint as a temporary home for the King of Sardinia. The 18th century brought a new era of artistic influence. It was during this time that the great Mozart, a young prodigy even then, held his only concert in Florence right here at Villa del Poggio Imperiale. The echoes of his music have long since faded, but imagine the elegance and grandeur of that evening. After the Medici family, the House of Lorraine continued the Villa’s grand tradition, transforming it into a beacon of Neoclassical architecture. But history, as it often does, took an unexpected turn. In the mid-19th century, when Florence was on the cusp of becoming the capital of a newly unified Italy, Villa del Poggio Imperiale found a new purpose. It became the home of the Educandato Femminile della Santissima Annunziata, a prestigious boarding school for girls. And so it remains today, a place of learning and growth, echoing with the laughter of students instead of the murmurings of courtiers.
