Picture this a grand villa overlooking the Rhine. This is Villa Cappell in Bonn a place steeped in history and intrigue. Built in 1904 and 1905 for millionaire Johanna Cappell it was designed by the architect Heinrich Plange. Its asymmetrical design blends Baroque and Picturesque styles. The villa boasts a main building a Rheinterrasse and a kitchen annex. It even had central heating a luxury for its time.

Imagine the scene in 1905. The freshly completed Villa Cappell awaited its first inhabitant. Johanna Cappell however only lived there briefly. The villa was soon rented out. This stunning property eventually became much more than a private residence.

After World War II the Villa Cappell was commandeered by American occupying forces. It served as quarters for military police. Later Belgian division generals resided here. When Bonn became the provisional capital of West Germany in 1949 US High Commissioner John Jay McCloy made it his residence. He and his wife Ellen oversaw extensive renovations. This included adding a tearoom and a tennis court. The interior was lavishly decorated. McCloy primarily worked from Frankfurt using the Villa for occasional visits. He later moved to a different residence.

In 1953 the British High Commissioner took over Villa Cappell. This was after his office moved from Cologne to Bonn. With the end of the occupation status in 1955 it became the residence of the British Embassy. The ambassador lived here. A guardhouse was even added. In 1959 the original gazebo was demolished. It was replaced by a single-story extension to the teahouse. It was used as a ballroom. The villa saw extensive use for entertaining. Villa Cappell served as the British ambassador’s residence until the late 1990s.

The British Embassy eventually moved to Berlin. By 2000 Villa Cappell was in private hands. On July 5 2000 it was added to the Bonn monument list. In 2010 it was even a film location. The Villa Cappell remains a testament to Bonn’s rich history. It stands as a beautiful example of architectural design. It also showcases the city’s role during the Cold War.
